THE SYNAESTHETE WINE TASTING WITH SOMMELIER JAIME SMITH

Jaime Smith is a world-renown sommelier who sees colors when he tastes wine.

Building Bridges Art Exchange hosted a talk and wine tasting, on November 5, 2017, with synaesthete sommelier, Jaime Smith, from the Four Seasons in Las Vegas. Jamie sees different color spectrums, shapes, and textures for each wine he tastes as well as color patterns for each scent he experiences.

During the event, Jaime shared his experience with wine making and tasting.  We then had a drink-and-draw with six fine wines.  For each wine, Jaime drew the colors and textures he saw.  The guests did the same using crayons and sketch pad.  After each wine people shared the colors they experienced in tasting each wine and then shared their amazing artwork.

Jaime Smith was introduced to Building Bridges by the wonderful synaesthete author and writer, Maureen Seaberg. To follow is Maureen’s insightful interview with Jaime Smith on her Psychology Today blog, Sensorium:

Victoria Vesna and Art Sci Center at UCLA presented  Octopus Brainstorming  at Building Bridges Art Exchange, November 14, 2017.

Victoria Vesna, Artist and director of UCLA Art | Sci Center presented a performative installation created in collaboration with neuroscientist Mark Cohen. This work utilizes real-time EEG brain waves, video, color, and sound in an illustration of brain-to-brain communication. Performers featured at Building Bridges Art Exchange gallery were Appelusa and Marcos Lutyens, synaesthete artists who also had their works featured at the gallery exhibition.                Octopus Brains. storming: Synaesthesia

The exhibition concluded with a five day performance at the 2018 LA Art Show at the LA Convention Center. Victoria Vesna and Art Sci Center co-created our exhibition by bringing their spectacular project, Octopus Brainstorming.  Scent Artist, Daniel Krasofski, created a special scent for guests to experience in honor of the exhibition, The Breath of Blue Trees. It was a delight, through our interactive art, music, and scent installations to introduce to tens of thousands of guests per day, many for the very first time, an exciting introduction to inherited synaesthesia.

My current project (with a highly talented team), Journey Through the Senses, is scheduled for September of 2020 in Santa Barbara, California and is in partnership with various professors and departments at the University of California Santa Barbara.  Journey through the Senses will celebrate the vast universe of human experience, neurodiversity, synaesthesia, and the five senses, through science, performance, art, and technology.

Thanks for stopping by.  Next time the magic of Leonardo da Vinci.  Best wishes, Daniel
